Among all the holiday resorts in the world, is Mauritius really the safest one from shark attacks?
Nothing beats a dream holiday on a hot tropical beach. Unfortunately, there has been many instances when these dreams have turned in the worst nightmare conceivable as a result of deadly shark attacks. Fortunately, there is one place in the world where tourists can thankfully claim to have never suffered from a shark attack. Indeed, Mauritius is completely free from shark attacks[i][ii][iii]. According to official statistics, no fatal shark attack has been recorded by Mauritian authorities.
The island is protected by coral reefs that forms a barrier all around the island, protecting it from marine predator[iv].There are plenty of sharks in deep sea outside the coral reef barrier, but it is impossible for these deadly predators to swim through dense wall of corals to penetrate inside the Mauritian lagoons. There are some places that is not protected by coral reefs, but these places are clearly identified by the authorities and local villagers. Tourists and local citizens are thus well informed and are guided as to which are the best spots for swimming and which ones to avoid. On, 22/04/1999[v], there was one non-fatal shark attack which occurred beyond the safe Mauritian lagoon.
Subsequently, Mauritius is potentially the only holiday resort, on the planet, that is totally free from shark attacks. During his visit to Mauritius in 1896[vi], the famous American writer, Mark Twain [vii], revealed Mauritian citizens spoke about their country in such a way that “…you gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.” International tourists often seek to visit Mauritius for its pure natural beauty, tropical parks, welcoming people, buoyant economy[viii], clean environment[ix], atmosphere with very low pollution[x] and wide range of holiday activities―all of which offers a unique lifetime experience. Notably, these unique and fabulous moments are not reserved solely for inland trips, but are also experienced by all men, women and children enjoying a fantastic swimming experience, on daily basis, in the warm, pristine and absolutely serene waters of the Mauritian lagoons.
